Falkland is probably the most historic and romantic of the villages and small towns around Cupar.
At one time, the Thanes of Fife were powerful men - having possession of much of Scotland - and they had their castle in what is now Falkland. A bit more up to date, the Stewarts made Falkland their favoured home. James II made Falkland a Royal Burgh, and it was James IV who built the palace that stands in the village.
The estate declined, however, and it wasn't until 1826 that Onesiphorus Tyndall-Bruce Esq. poured money into Falkland and its estate, rebuilding the parish church, built the Bruce Fountain which stands outside the church, in the Market Square, and also building the House of Falkland.
Falkland Palace is in the custody of the National Trust for Scotland, and the palace and grounds are open to visitors.
