Suggested Cycle Route : Cupar to Freuchie and Chance Inn

The Kingdom of Fife Cycleways Project has developed over 300 miles (500 km) of cycle route through Fife. This route takes you from Cupar, through the Howe of Fife bringing fine views of the countryside that surrounds the town.

The route starts and finishes at Cupar railway station. If you intend arriving by car, there is ample free parking space at the Fluthers car park. Exit the car park, turn right then bear left at the War Memorial traffic lights. The station is round the next bend, on the left side of the road.

22 miles (35 km), taking approx. 4 hours.

Grade:

Moderate with a few climbs.

Category:

A waymarked ride on quiet lanes and with two short off-road sections.

Meals are available in Cupar, snacks and meals en route at Springfield, Ladybank, Kingskettle and Freuchie.

Turn left out of Cupar railway station then first right over South Bridge. At the T junction with Millgate, turn left. Shortly after the fire station and a 'No entry' sign to the right, take the next right (Millgate / Maitland Drive). At the T junction with Millbank, turn left.

Follow this road for 3 miles, passing the hospital on your left. At the T junction with the railway line ahead, turn right. Immediately after passing the Springfield Tavern, turn left (opposite Post Office) then right past the chapel.

The tarmac turns to track, goes past woodland and under a railway line. At the T junction with the road, turn left then first right to Ladybank.

At the T junction in Ladybank (with the Masonic Hall ahead), turn left.

In Kingskettle, immediately after the church, turn right onto South Street. At the T junction at the end of Rumdewan, turn right under the bridge.

At the X-roads with the busy A92, go straight ahead. At the T junction in Freuchie, turn left. Recross the A92 then, after 1/2 mile, at the X-roads with the A914, turn right then left signposted "Star, Kennoway".

Steep climb! Easy to miss. About a mile after reaching the summit, on a gentle descent through woodland, turn left onto a minor road.

Descend, then climb after Burnturk. At the X-roads after quarry workings, go straight ahead then shortly fork left to Chance Inn.

Easy to miss. On a sharp right-hand bend in Chance Inn, turn left. This becomes an off-road climb which you may prefer to walk. Go past Scotstarvit Tower, cross the A916 onto the drive leading to the Hill of Tarvit Mansion.

Keep bearing right past the mansion to rejoin the road, then turn left. At the T junction in Bridgend, turn left.

Long descent. At the T junction with the A914, bear right to return to Cupar railway station. On completion of your run, there are several places to have a snack or a meal before you make your way home.
