What to See

Old Parish Church

Cupar's churches offer a wide range of architectural styles. From the relatively ancient Old Parish Church (the 'Old Kirk' - the spire dates from 1415) to the modern circular St Columba's Roman Catholic Church.

St Columba's was designed by Peter Whinston, and is based on the circular style used for Liverpool Cathedral. The building was completed in 1964.

St Johns In the Old Kirk's churchyard, look for the Covenanters' grave. Here lies the heads of two covenanters who murdered Archbishop Sharp at Magus Muir in 1679. They were "martyred at Edinburgh July 13th 1681 for adhering to the word of God & Scotlands covenanted work of Reformation". The hands of David Hackston are also buried here - he reputedly watched the murder.

The Bonygate has two significant churches - St John's (Cupar Free Church) and Cupar Baptist Church. St John's was completed in 1878. Its steeple towers to 160 feet. Cupar Baptists have moved around the town, taking over their current church from the United Presbyterians. The building was completed in 1866.

St Catherine Street also hosts a church - half-way along on the north side of the road, you will find St James Episcopal Church.

Cupar's churches are included in the "Cupar Heritage Trail" leaflet, available from Council offices.
